“Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, "Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest."”— Mark 6:31 (Niv)
Jesus tells the disciples to come away by themselves to a quiet place and rest. The disciples — who have been doing the very work He has commissioned them to do. The rest is not a reward they have earned by performance. It is a part of the mission itself.
If your job is sacred, your rest is sacred too. The exhausted disciple is not the most useful one. The exhausted parent is not the most attentive one. The exhausted leader is not the most discerning one. Rest is not the opposite of obedience; it is, often, the very form obedience takes.
If rest feels like failure to you, sit with that for a moment. What story are you telling yourself about what makes you valuable? What if your value is not, in fact, what you produce? What if it is who you are, in the eyes of the One who made you for love and for joy and for gladness, and who delights in you when you are sleeping just as much as when you are working?
The pattern is older than we are. The grace is older than the pattern. We come to it not as students at the head of the class but as children at the foot of a long table, where the meal has been ready for a while and the chair has always been waiting for us. Sit. Receive what has already been given. The day will be longer than you think, and the bread will be enough.
