When Faith Outpaces Fear

Fear is not the opposite of faith — fear is the soil in which faith does its hardest work. Paul reminds Timothy that the Spirit God gave us is not a spirit of fear but of power, love, and self-control. Power to keep going when the path is uncertain. Love to keep loving when it is costly. Self-control to keep our attention on the One who has not failed us, even on the days we cannot feel His nearness.

Faith is not the certainty that things will go well. Faith is the certainty that the God who walks with us is good, regardless. Outpacing fear is not denying it; it is choosing not to obey it. The disciples in the boat were terrified of the storm. The point of the miracle was not that they should never be afraid again. The point was that the One in the boat with them rules the wind and waves, and that He had not, in fact, abandoned them to drown.

If you are afraid today, you are not faithless. You are human. The question is not whether the fear is there. The question is who you will look to while it is.

The pattern is older than we are. The grace is older than the pattern. We come to it not as students at the head of the class but as children at the foot of a long table, where the meal has been ready for a while and the chair has always been waiting for us. Sit. Receive what has already been given. The day will be longer than you think, and the bread will be enough.
