“Assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness”— Ephesians 4:21-24 (Esv)
The Christian life is a form of partnership between us and the Lord, aided by the Holy Spirit. We are saved by grace through repentance and belief in the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. But that is not the end in itself. It is rather the beginning of a process of change into His likeness.
Now, to make that transformation a reality, we have a part to play. We are enjoined to “put off the old self” and “put on the new self”. However, without the renewing of the spirit of our minds (where decisions are made), that desired change cannot happen. That is why some never experience any real change, even though they are “Christians”! The old self still rules their lives, raising questions.
If we would truly enjoy the new life that is in Christ, we must make that ‘switch’ through being in The Word and praying that it will indeed affect us. Only that person who has believed can do that for himself. None else would, not even the Spirit of God, Who is only in to help us. That is our personal role to bring about the change that authenticates the Christian’s newfound life in Christ. Do not neglect your part. Jesus is coming soon!
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I come before You today, asking for help to be in the Word, to imbibe it and allow my mind to be renewed for my transformation, in Jesus’ name. Amen!
