The Long Obedience of a Small Church

Where two or three are gathered. The promise is not made to the megachurch or to the influencer pulpit. It is made to the small room. Two believers. Three. Gathered in His name. He is there.

The small church is not a stepping stone to a larger one. It is its own complete thing. Its faithfulness is not measured by attendance graphs but by the slow, ordinary work of people learning to love each other across decades, of crises met with casseroles, of children baptized by the same hands that buried their grandparents.

If you are part of a small church, do not be discouraged by what it is not. Look at what it is. The Spirit shows up just as fully in the small room as in the large one. The bread of communion is not less in a small basket. The water of baptism is not thinner in a small bowl. The God of the universe is fully present where two or three are gathered. Take that seriously, and the small church begins to look very large indeed.

The pattern is older than we are. The grace is older than the pattern. We come to it not as students at the head of the class but as children at the foot of a long table, where the meal has been ready for a while and the chair has always been waiting for us. Sit. Receive what has already been given. The day will be longer than you think, and the bread will be enough.
