Living with Open Hands

How often do we white-knuckle our resources instead of trusting the Giver? Paul's instruction to Timothy was to command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain.

The biblical antidote to fear is not accumulation but generosity. Open hands cannot grasp, but they also cannot be pried open by a thief. When we hold our possessions loosely, we discover that the One who gives bread also gives the courage to share it.

Stewardship is not a financial discipline; it is a posture of the heart that confesses, in every transaction, that nothing we hold was earned in isolation. Every paycheck rides on a thousand kindnesses we did not see. Every harvest depends on rain we did not summon. The honest accounting of life always ends in gratitude, and gratitude always loosens the grip.

• Name three resources you are tempted to grasp.
• Identify one person you can bless this week with one of them.
• Pray briefly: 'Open my hands, Lord, and keep them open.'

The pattern is older than we are. The grace is older than the pattern. We come to it not as students at the head of the class but as children at the foot of a long table, where the meal has been ready for a while and the chair has always been waiting for us. Sit. Receive what has already been given. The day will be longer than you think, and the bread will be enough.
