“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.”— Psalm 19:1 (Niv)
Psalm 19 is bold. The heavens declare. The skies proclaim. The day pours out speech and the night reveals knowledge. There is no language where their voice is not heard.
Creation, in other words, is not silent. It has been telling the story of its Maker since the morning of the world, and it has not stopped. The mountain knows. The river knows. The bird in the apple tree knows. The whole thing is hymning a song too constant for our distracted ears, and the discipline of attention is the discipline of finally hearing what was always there.
Step outside today, even briefly. Look. Listen. Don't bring a phone. Don't bring an agenda. Let the heavens declare what they have been declaring all along. You will not learn anything new. You will be reminded of something old, something you knew before words: that the universe is not random, and you are not alone, and the One who made the orchids made you too, and He calls both very good.
The pattern is older than we are. The grace is older than the pattern. We come to it not as students at the head of the class but as children at the foot of a long table, where the meal has been ready for a while and the chair has always been waiting for us. Sit. Receive what has already been given. The day will be longer than you think, and the bread will be enough.
