“But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so”— James 3:8-10 (Nkjv)
The tongue is quite a small part of the human body yet it has great power to bring good or bad consequences. It is vital for us to know what we are actually dealing with when it comes to our tongue. It has power enough to build or destroy, even whole nations! The Word of God calls it an “unruly evil” and “full of deadly poison”.
It is clear how true this is because of the great effect one word or statement from an individual can have. It has the capacity to ignite great troubles. We may not give attention to that but it is important we do not take the tongue for granted. It pays to watch it.
There is good news and bad news about it. The bad news is that the tongue is not tamed; you cannot subdue it completely (as the Bible says). It may utter something quite unpleasant before you think. There is however good news: you have the power to control yourself. The best way is to choose to be quiet when need be, and not give the tongue a chance to utter the worst. You have the ability to decide to speak or hold your peace. Jesus is coming soon!
Prayer
Heavenly Father, I ask for the grace and a strong willpower to be silent when I need to. Grant me the ability to hold my peace in times of great temptations, in Jesus’ name. Amen!
