Boundaries as Beatitude

“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.”— Matthew 5:5 (Niv)

Meekness is the most misunderstood word in the Beatitudes. We hear it as weakness — passive, doormat, no-spine. But the Greek praus referred to a war horse: powerful, capable of crushing, voluntarily under the rein. The meek are not those who cannot fight. They are those who have decided not to fight every battle.

This is the foundation of healthy boundaries. Saying no is not unloving; it is often the most loving thing available. The person who says yes to everything ends up giving a watered-down version of themselves to everyone, present nowhere, helpful nowhere, joyful nowhere.

Beatitude boundaries come from a settled identity, not from a wounded reactivity. They sound less like 'I refuse' and more like 'I am giving my best yes elsewhere.' They are kept gently, without bitterness, because they are kept in the strength of the One who knows our limits better than we do.

The pattern is older than we are. The grace is older than the pattern. We come to it not as students at the head of the class but as children at the foot of a long table, where the meal has been ready for a while and the chair has always been waiting for us. Sit. Receive what has already been given. The day will be longer than you think, and the bread will be enough.
