David's one ask, Psalm 27, was to dwell in the house of the Lord and gaze on the beauty of the Lord. Not to learn anything. Not to accomplish anything. To behold.
Beauty is a theology. It tells us that the universe is not a machine but a household. It tells us that creation has been spoken into being by a God who delights in delight. The face of a friend, the curve of a hill at evening, the chord that resolves at the end of a hymn — these are not decorations on a serious world. They are the world telling us, in its own voice, who made it.
Cultivate beauty deliberately. Look at one beautiful thing, today, on purpose. Not to extract a lesson from it. Not to share it. Just to receive it. The beauty was made for you, by the One who is Himself beautiful, and learning to receive it well is part of learning to receive Him.
The pattern is older than we are. The grace is older than the pattern. We come to it not as students at the head of the class but as children at the foot of a long table, where the meal has been ready for a while and the chair has always been waiting for us. Sit. Receive what has already been given. The day will be longer than you think, and the bread will be enough.
