“Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.”— 1 Peter 5:7 (Esv)

The instruction to cast our anxieties on Him is not a command to feel calm. It is a command to be honest. The anxieties exist; pretending otherwise will not banish them. Casting is a verb of motion — the worry has to be picked up to be thrown.

What gets cast must first be named. The vague, free-floating dread that follows us through the day is much harder to release than the specific, named fear we can hand over: the bill, the diagnosis, the conversation, the loneliness. Pray specifically. Confess specifically. Surrender specifically.

Because he cares for you. The casting is not into a void. It is into the hands of the One who has already proved His care by going to the cross. Whatever you set down with Him, you set down with someone who already knows the weight of it. He will not be surprised by what you bring. He will not lecture you. He will receive what you have been carrying, because that is what love does.

The pattern is older than we are. The grace is older than the pattern. We come to it not as students at the head of the class but as children at the foot of a long table, where the meal has been ready for a while and the chair has always been waiting for us. Sit. Receive what has already been given. The day will be longer than you think, and the bread will be enough.

Prayer

Receive what I have been carrying, Father. I'd rather be honest with You than impressive.
